Average guesses by weekday
Historically, Tuesdays have given players the most trouble at 4.95 guesses on average, while Sundays have been the smoothest at 2.73. Today is a Sunday, and across 3 Sunday puzzles so far, the average sits at 2.73 guesses.
Zoomed to 2.68–5.00 guesses so the small differences are visible. A longer bar means players needed more guesses.
Data sources and methodology
Every difficulty score uses a six-point scale. It blends two signals: player scores shared publicly after solving (the primary signal), and an analysis of the word itself — letter rarity, repeated letters, and trap words — as a backup when player results are still thin. When the sample for a puzzle is still small, the score is labeled an early estimate and replaced once more results arrive. That final number is what sets the Easy, Medium, Medium+, or Hard label you see across the site.
- Primary signal: player data from Bluesky and Mastodon. The headline and rankings come from the per-puzzle average of publicly shared player scores collected from Bluesky (via adaptive time-slicing that pages through the full day's posts without login) and Mastodon's #wordle timeline, deduplicated by account, and never inflated. Typical puzzles collect ~2,000 shared grids. Duplicates are removed by post ID before any counting.
- Backup signal: word characteristics analysis. When fewer than 20 player scores are available, the score blends in a word-characteristics analysis (letter rarity, repeated letters, trap words, vowel shape). With 5–19 scores the blend is 70% player data and 30% word analysis; below 5 scores the word analysis is used alone and the result stays an early estimate.
- Guess distribution. The bars come from one internally consistent public-results sample. We don’t mix bucket counts from different cohorts.
- Source safeguards. A puzzle’s score only leaves early estimate status after its collection method and minimum sample size have been validated. Until then, it doesn’t affect the rankings.
- Daily updates. The difficulty score and distribution refresh each day. Every page pulls from the same validated daily record, so the figures stay consistent across the site.
These figures use aggregate counts calculated from publicly shared score posts. This page does not display usernames, profiles, or individual posts.
